still no pictures, just stories

Finally! Some internet connection!! A few days ago went to Entoto mountain - a mountain at 10,000 feet, up a road much like Magnolia. Old women cut firewood up there, and then walk down the mountain with the firewood in HUGE piles on their backs.
Frequently I see many women devoutly standing in the rain outside Orthodox Christian churches while services are going on - sometimes with umbrellas, more often without. Yesterday someone told me it was because doors close at a certain time, and after that, they can't go in. Today someone told me it is because the women are menstruating - and because of that can't go in the church. I'll keep asking.
Today we saw two doctors - one a local doctor for Ali's cough and diarrhea, and the other the Embassy Physical, where they terrified her by taking her away from me, then while she was screaming wildly they did some developmental tests (sitting, crawling, can she say MaMa, etc) and then informed me that she is developmentally delayed. Yeah, well whatEVER, for Pete's sake! Good news is she's clearly very attached already ;).

Little Alemitu continues to be, imho, the sweetest, cutest, sharpest, most delightful little "bean" on the planet.

  1. Thanks for the continuing updates. It all sounds so normal the way you write about it. Normal is good in this case. Hope all continues well. Is she ready for her first kayak lesson?
